Tanoa Hotel’s Sustainability Strategy Launch

In August we marked a significant milestone, with the official launch of our Sustainability Strategy at Tanoa International Dateline. Attended by Tongan Prime Minister, Rt Hon Siaosi ‘Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni who commending Tanoa’s ambitious sustainability aspirations and reinforced the hotel’s vital role within the Tongan community.

The Prime Minister praised Tanoa’s proactive stance on climate action and its dedication to fostering community resilience. He noted that Tanoa’s eagerness to test and implement new climate initiatives, combined with its focus on local job creation and community-based projects, exemplifies the hotel’s leadership in sustainable development.

Our strategy is built on three core pillars: Environment, People, and Community.

Plastic Waste Reduction: Through a new partnership with Coca-Cola, Tanoa has already diverted 120 kg of plastic waste from landfills in just three months. The hotel has also successfully installed soap and shampoo dispensers in its Fiji hotels, which is expected to eliminate over 100,000 plastic bottles annually.

Glass Recycling Initiative: Recognising the lack of large-scale glass recycling on the island, Tanoa is collaborating with MOT Industries to develop an on-site glass crushing facility. The crushed glass will be repurposed into bricks, addressing waste management challenges while reducing the environmental impact of local sand mining.

Local Food Production: Tanoa has expanded its on-site gardens, growing its own food and furthering its commitment to sustainable practices.

Energy and Transportation: The hotel is currently exploring business cases for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and is considering the introduction of electric vans for airport transfers.

Community Support: Tanoa employs over 85 local staff and provides ongoing support through the Reddy Foundation, including recent renovations at the ‘Alonga Disability Centre. The hotel is also planning to fund sustainability mentorship programs for local schools, helping to build the next generation of environmental stewards in Tonga.

Looking to the future, Stewart outlined Tanoa’s ambitious goals, including setting climate and waste reduction targets aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative. He reaffirmed the hotel’s commitment to achieving a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and striving for net-zero emissions well before 2050.
